Frankly I believe those fancy lights are all about hype and not about useful light. The manufacturers love it because they are profit makers. Nobody at the dealership is going to have either the skills or tools to diagnose the problem. Their only option is to swap parts until they fix it. I would ask how many hours are on the lamps? They degrade over use just like any lamp. Log in Register. Search titles only. Search Advanced search…. New posts. Search forums.

I know the Xenon headlamps fitted to my W are supposed to be lovely and bright I've no way of knowing, but can assume they may not have been touched since new - that's 8 years and , miles. Should I expect them to be suffering and needing replacement? Interested to know other people's experiences. Cheers, Jeremy. Click to expand Xenon headlights is like driving in the daylight. Would Xenons have been factory fit in ? Not saying they weren't - just didn't think they were fitted 8 yrs ago.
If they are original then that seems very long life - I was warned by an MB dealer not to spec them as an option as you can be left high and dry a long way from home if a bulb blows, which he suggested was not unusual. There is no high pressure danger with xenon light bulbs , as there is with halogens. You can dim a light bulb two ways - decrease the current or decrease the duty cycle of the source waveform.
If you put a resistor or potentiometer in series with the bulb , the current will be decreased accordingly. The bulb filament will not heat up as much, and will dim. HID headlights are much brighter than your typical halogen bulbs. The most basic type of HID headlight upgrade involves installing or wiring a ballast and then replacing the stock capsules with HID capsules. This is technically possible in some cases, but you may end up with a poor beam pattern. Getting pulled over for having one headlight out In most states, it is required by law that headlights must be used from sunset to sunrise.
Therefore, if you have a headlight burned out, it is possible and likely even probable that you 'll get pulled over. Most headlights will dim over time. Replacing them regularly will ensure the best lighting performance. Consider replacing standard halogen headlights with high performance headlights that produce a light closer in color to natural daylight. These whiter, brighter bulbs help improve your visibility at night. Common reasons for this to happen: Corroded Ground Wire: One of the most common causes of dim headlights is a corroded ground wire.
Ground wires connect the bulb circuit to your car's chassis which serves as the ground itself. Bad Alternator: Another very common reason to see dim headlights is a failing alternator. If the headlights are only slightly foggy , you can try and restore them using an abrasive, like toothpaste, and lots of scrubbing.
First, clean the headlights with Windex or soap and water. Then, using a soft cloth, rub a fingertip amount of toothpaste onto the wet headlight. Toothpaste with baking soda works best. Many drivers think that a dim headlight is caused by a poor power connection. That's rarely the case. It's far more likely that vehicle is delivering enough power, but the ground connection is corroded, therby reducing light output.
If the one headlight is dimmer problem disappears, you've solve the problem. Xenon HID bulbs are more expensive than halogens due to the different technology and gases used to produce the bulb but on the flip side they do last a lot longer than halogen bulbs.
