The interface is quick and logical. Boxee really begins to shine however once you point it at a few locations on your network. Based entirely on file names, Boxee goes out and fetches cover art, show and episode information for everything in my collection.
The same organization that Boxee uses on aggregated content from the web applies to content it finds on your network as well. You can add multiple network shares for Boxee to keep track of. Once added, Boxee will automatically try to categorize the content on your shares. Adding new content can be done automatically. TV shows should be labeled Show.
Hello, Not sure if anyone has identified this oddity before me, or if there exists a workaround or anything, but when I use XBMC or Boxee and import my copied movies stored as folder structures, ripped from within myMovies they are identified by both XBMC and Boxee as multiple copies of the same movie. It appears that these two applications are identifying each.
Can anyone please suggest a way to have xbmc and boxee read the folder structure as a single movie like the myMovies media center interface does? Looking back into the issue I think I may do well to better explain the exact situation I am seeing. Let's begin with Boxee, when i go to the 'Videos' section and select one of my movies from the 'My Videos' section here the movies only appear once each I am then presented with a pop-up prompt to select the 'source' I would like to use to watch the movie.
Here is where Boxee identifies each. VOB file as a unique source for the movie. For the life of me I cannot figure out a way to get boxee to load the movie as a DVD like myMovies does. Users can also access content from their home network, a memory stick, or through Web searches via Boxee's simple Webkit browser.
I didn't spend much time with these features during my brief two-day evaluation, but I liked how easy it was to find and play my daughter's ballet recitals that I'd stored on YouTube, and I appreciated that Boxee automatically gathered up missing metadata for my music.
The biggest technical issue I encountered is that video currently launches in windowed form in the browser rather than in full screen mode. I was told this will soon be changed through an automatic firmware update, and the fix can't come soon enough; moving a pointer to select a tiny "enlarge" icon using the remote's arrow keys is a drag. On the subject of the Boxee's remote, it's a clever little RF control with a two-sided design.
The five per cent that it didn't handle -- conducting searches for specific terms and entering data during setup -- was looked after by the other side, which sports a thumb-sized QWERTY keyboard. I loved it -- though if I had my druthers it would also have a small touch pad to make those pesky pointer movements a little easier. That's not a bad price, especially considering it's a one-time investment; no subscription is required.
It doesn't quite offer a range of traditional content comprehensive enough to let it replace a cable set top box, but it's nice to have around as an extra option for living room viewing. Follow us on Twitter: globeandmail Opens in a new window.
